A favorite thing to tell people mentioning LDAP is reminding them to consider that LDAP is the "lightweight" version of DAP. Dawg that is a fucking STORY.

I have no clue and worked with LDAP and telcos in Sweden. Not that they connected in any significant way... I guess the whole NT based telephony API took off using AD?

True story: University Of Aberystwyth was essentially gifted a Sun 4/330 to partake in the ISODE X.500 directory project (DAP) X.500 was unwieldy beyond comprehension so the machine just sat there. Could not be used for user service because contracts and support, so I developed Crack on it.

Under the skin I know it is a vast oversimplification but the really short version is: all of the X.25 & family protocols are a signal lesson in why the IETF is a good idea and how standards should be optional and based upon "rough consensus and working code" - rather than ITU dictates.

...and the less said about the X.400 protocols the better. There was a running joke about a signature block giving an X.400 address "address too long to fit into a 65536-byte buffer"...

I still find it fairly hilarious that they managed to produce something that was actually architecturally more problematic than UUCP addressing. Because of course all internet users exist within some kind of ORGANISATIONAL UNIT with a COMMON NAME.
