GM Tip: In superhero games, make powers matter by showing consequences. That energy blast didn't just miss the villain: it punched through three buildings. Heroes should feel powerful AND responsible. #ttrpg #supers #rpg #ttrpgCommunity

If that's the vibe you want to go for. You should be careful of consequences like this. You could cause your players to become resentful or hurt the enjoyment of combat, especially in games where villians can be really hard to hit in combat.

I usually run a variation of Ars Magica. A miss is just a miss. A zero roll has a 1 in 10 chance of hurting someone else. The more complex the roll the worse it gets. For serious magic botches the scale is geometric. A single botch is inconvenient. Anything more will hurt. A triple botch might kill.

To really fail you’d have to roll three or more zeros on d10s. If you were trying something seriously complicated with a lot of power behind it, then that could happen. The joke was that a single botch was inconvenient. A double was painful. A triple was deadly. Above that was catastrophic.

A quadruple botch was in the category of “Surviving witnesses report…” Quintuple botch: “The archaeological record shows layers that indicate…” Sextuple botch: “Historical records have rumors of a society…”

Please be careful with this; this is absolutely not a base assumption of Starfinder and if you just start telling your players their misses/critical misses have effects that aren't started on misses/critical misses without talking about it first, you're going to be breaking GM/player trust.

oh yes, i like to introduce this concept first in a wilderness area, such as with flammable swamp gas or with a collapse-prone cavern. In this way, the characters will know in advance about the potential consequences.

I had an incident with one of the PCs, they were fighting on top of a tower and threw a javelin that missed... It didn't miss an innocent villager at ground level though 😬

But maybe chat with your players about tone first. This can be a really upsetting thing to inflict on your players unannounced, when they thought they thought they were signing up for a Silver Age comic and instead they got Invincible.
