Fully agree! I love when my players surprise me!

The session I still retell is the one where the DM let me wreck the plan. The ones where they didn't, I forgot by dinner.

Addendum, don't be afraid to call a short break to gather your thoughts when that happens either.

This was the best thing one of my former DMs would do. He'd reward surprising him. Extra XP if you did something like solving a problem in a way he didn't consider; altering the story sometimes if one interacted with NPCs in a certain way, or have them give you bonuses etc.

Don't be afraid to compliment, too.

yes, as a core principle, i like to encourage creativity, as long as it is productive and fun for the group
