Tottenham's mindless attack

tacticsjournal.comTottenham's mindless attackRoberto De Zerbi’s players need to have exceptional technical and passing ability to pull off their passing patterns in the build-up. That is the thing everyone focuses on. But what we really should be focusing on is athleticism.Without pacey players hauling air up and down the pitch, every careful build-up would end in a turnover because they are not trained to be patient. You could say that about every team, but without that far post run they are nothing. Isolate the wing, block off everything on the far side, and they have no attack because they will drive the ball towards the goal with or without that run. Every attack is ending once they break.Pass, pass, pass, break, and then straight runs. Very little variations in the timing or angle of the runs. When they break, players run as if they are on rails. It is a brute force attack. It is a ‘if we do the same patterns over and over and over it will eventually work’ mindset. It is direct but when we think of direct we think of longer balls lofted into the air to the forwards. No, it is direct in the fact that it is mindless. Get the ball form A to B and then run forward to shoot. It has to be calculated for it to work but it is a mindless job. They look like they are executing runs not making runs. There is no passion in that way of playing. You have no time to feel emotions when you are memorizing patterns.
