"Claude watermarks your code now." Dude. It's not yours, you didn't write it.

It is my code. I told the machine what to do and I paid for the license. When a customer orders code at my agency and I write it myself and deliver it, this very code also becomes the code of the customer. That is because it was ordered and paid for. This is how it works.

You're just another consumer, as you rightly point out, and you don't have the right to intrude on projects and communities that are not interested in AI slop rebadged under your name.

Some people use AI for code review. Others for refactoring. That does not mean AI wrote the code. How about those using it on code that existed many years before AI was a thing.

How can code be watermarked? When I "coded" 30+ years ago (Turbo Pascal ;-)) it was plain text. The only possible watermark could be an comment line which is easy to delete.

As long as the LLM runs at nonzero temperature, there will be choices for next tokens. These choices are where the watermarks go. The code needs to be much longer to embedd the watermark than in natural language, but it will work the same way.

With this logic Microsoft should watermark all documents that are edited with Word or Excel. And your web browser should watermark everything you type on it if the spell checker is enabled. Just because AI touched something does not automatically mean it created it.
