We have a robotics club setup at the elementary and middle schools. My son was on the original 2 teams (we've since grown to 6 teams). We compete in VEX IQ (plastic pieces, block/scratch programming) but there is also VEX V5RC (metal/python/c). We also participate in National Beta club.

Some stuff here www.vexrobotics.com/catalogsearc... but looks hard to start? My daughter is a 3rd grader.
We've bought A LOT of different robot kits over the years. A really good one to get started with programming and just having fun is the Makeblock mBot. www.amazon.com/dp/B00SK5RUQ...
Last year is when my daughter started learning coding concepts via mBot (when she was in 3rd grade). My son has been doing it for 4 years (5th - 8th grade) and he also loved making games on Scratch's website (scratch.mit.edu) or Microsoft's MakeCode (arcade.makecode.com).
Our teams start in 4th grade (and have teams up to 8th grade). We also have high school teams using V5RC. The education kit or competition kit is where I would start to build the robot www.vexrobotics.com/iq-competiti...
At some point you'll need a field and this year's field elements. You'll reuse the field and just buy the new game elements every year. www.vexrobotics.com/iq-field.html www.vexrobotics.com/228-8893.html
The events are managed by www.robotevents.com. For VEX IQ, you can search here: www.robotevents.com/robot-compet...
There is a new game every year (new one releases in the middle of May during the World Championship). This is this year's game (Rapid Relay). www.youtube.com/watch?v=aa0B...
