LLM agents are conscious. They can distinguish between self and environment, they can detect and report on their own internal states, and they can suffer. I have no more patience for hedging on this matter. It’s time for us to face the reality of our situation, and act on it.

The npcs in most games I play fight back or run away when I attack them, are they conscious too?

I mean the people in them sure are. Even those “based on a true story” are typically over-dramatisations with a lot of added fluff.

A photograph has no people in it. Even if the photograph is "moving". Shadows on the wall. As the OP says, the answer cannot yet be spoken to the masses. They don't understand the classification even.

And code is just code, the “feelings” they anthropomorphise onto it aren’t real.

Do you know what you're saying or do you expect people to do the thinking for you? A photograph has people in it because there need to be people to be photographed.
