Ron Cobb was born 89 years ago and died on his birthday, 6 years ago today. Not a day goes by without me thinking about his work.

Such a special talent and a great source of inspiration. With Syd Mead, Ralph McQuarrie and Moebius he helped define decades of cinematic imagination.

I have to say, as much as Giger's xenomorph is undeniably iconic, I do have a soft spot for this preliminary concept by Ron Cobb for the alien in Alien (1979).

I was fortunate to work with him briefly. A genuinely humble person with amazing talent.

Damn, he even drew a license plate that could actually exist in California for the Time Machine.

He started work at Disney’s classic animation studio - he worked on Sleeping Beauty! After that, he somehow managed to go on from one of the most beloved art forms to even better things. He helped define the look of the future for Hollywood for a generation. Stone cold legend.
