It gives you an automatic connection at all participating orgs, with 802.1x authentication handled by your home identity provider. We also treat eduroam ingresses slightly less aggressively than public. It doesn't give you an overlay net unfortunately so you're still at the wims of the local config.

You can seamlessly connect to WiFi at any institution that has eduroam (which, unfortunately, doesn't include mine, so I can't benefit from it anywhere).

Yeah you don't have to get an access code, you can just connect.
