1/ I’m Till Eckert, a ProPublica reporter. For the past 2 weeks, I’ve been going to the same NY immigration courthouse. Nearly every time, I see ICE agents arresting immigrants. Today, a woman was slammed to the ground after begging officials not to take her husband away. Thread 👇

2/ I stayed by Monica Moreta-Galarza, who was seeking asylum with her family, until she was discharged from the hospital. “Over [in Ecuador], they beat us there too. I didn’t think I’d come here to the United States and the same thing would happen to me,” she said in Spanish.

3/ To be clear, these sorts of actions were outside the norm historically for ICE agents. Yet under Trump’s second term, immigration courts have shifted from being seen as relatively safe venues into places where immigrants face the risk of surveillance, arrest and sometimes even violence.

4/ Congressman Dan Goldman promised to follow up on the incident, which he called another example of “secret police officers who are attacking our communities with excessive violence…and they just think that they can do it with impunity, because nobody is holding them accountable.”

7/ ICE has previously said its officers “use only the level of force that is objectively reasonable.” But across America, what’s “reasonable” has changed.

No what is reasonable has not changed. Republicans and Trump have given ICE and cops the permission to use violence against us with their protection.

👍That one, I can tell, is not a trained law enforcement officer. He's tripping, grabbing like he's untrained, bumbling. He looks like an angry old white Nazi with a burr up his ass. He's old, and Trump has hired new, unqualified people, & he's one of those protected. No mask 'cause he doesn't care.

I am curious what are those two security bozos doing? They are totally inactive just staring at the ICE man openly abusing a woman. US will eventually be paying huge compensation to all those unfortunate individuals and hunting for ICE individuals so that they can be prosecuted.

That little girl saw her mother slammed on the ground *after* her father was taken away. Needless physical and emotional trauma at the hands of someone pretending to enforce the law.

Here's what happened after we reported on the incident. bsky.app/profile/till...

New: The video I filmed of an ICE agent shoving a woman to the ground at 26 Federal Plaza, a New York City immigration courthouse, went viral. Then, in a rare move, the government publicly reprimanded the officer, calling his actions “unacceptable.” www.propublica.org/article/ice-...

Update: He‘s back. bsky.app/profile/till...

I recently reported on an ICE officer who was publicly reprimanded and “relieved of his duties” after shoving a woman to the ground in an NYC immigration court. Well, he’s back. DHS did not respond to a request for comment. Original story: www.propublica.org/article/ice-... Photos: Carol Guzy

Update: Ruben Ortiz-Lopez is free – for now. bsky.app/profile/did:...

Ruben Ortiz-Lopez — detained at 26 Federal Plaza in late Sept — has been released from ICE custody after a habeas petition, court watchers say. He’s the husband of Monica Moreta-Galarza, who was shoved to the ground by an ICE agent. Backstory: www.propublica.org/article/ice-... Photo: Carol Guzy

Are you guys following what has been happening in Broadview, IL. Some families have reported to Chicago news outlets that families arrive to report and are not coming back out and have no idea where they are.

This needs to go viral. Ice is out of control. This family is scared to live in their home country and come here and it’s the same thing. Shame on that man throwing a lady to the ground. I hope karma comes for this ICE agents.

Are any of your colleagues writing about how none of the panel of CJA lawyers representing indigent defendants in federal court have been paid since July and now with the government shut down we won’t be paid until that’s resolved either?

Seeing more and more videos like the one above, it is clear that the level of unreasonable force has increased dramatically and publicly during this administration. It is not sensible for a society to allow such completely unnecessary violence against anyone.
