Just got back from Texas. Really weird to land in Texas and have bluesky tell me "you need to upload your driver's license to keep using this app". How is anyone OK with that? Also, how is anyone OK with the temperature getting to 107?!

do we prefer to have tech providers tell us they're going to choose which local laws to comply with?

I prefer to live in places with sane laws that don't use "protect the kids" as an excuse for draconian surveillance laws.

I don't really have a strong opinion on tech providers and local law compliance... I worked on GDPR stuff for MS and I know how that stuff can be messy. I DO have a strong opinion on tech providers lobbying for regulations that hurt privacy.

I feel that it's bad if we ask tech providers to ignore laws we personally don't like rather than working on changing those laws; I rather like the principle that tech cos obey laws the tech provider who lobbied for age verification was the bit of pornhub that owns an age verification technology
