Navier-Stokes — huge drama around this truth is more like: 1. critical insight produced by human mathematicians 2. massive acceleration from AI 3. Ant employee worked with NYU prof to carry out the research program statement by NYU prof: cims.nyu.edu/~tristanb/st...

there’s a higher-than-you’d-think possibility that this is actually a leak and not a prediction (pretty sure Andrew only bets when the dice are biased in his favor)

The more lurid accusations aside, this seems particularly relevant to me. Really calls into question the “pure AI” capabilities claimed in past announcements. Possibly industry-wide. Of course, no way of directly auditing it.

To be sure, I don’t really buying the Buckmaster insinuation that a hastily-assembled research strike force could suddenly complete a general solution, if indeed OpenAI has it. Probably, that background work has been ongoing for some time at OpenAI and Anthropic. In the past (?), at DeepMind.

but also, the OpenAI crew were not mathematicians, it remains possible that OpenAI’s models actually discovered a real breakthrough where Claude had to rely on human ingenuity. Hard to say…

My base assumption is that it is a coincidence. The Córdoba/Martínez-Zoroa paper was published in 2023… and Astra just had it in its training data of course… and Astra just searched it out as the (presumed) correct approach to attack the general solution ultimately, same as Buckmaster/Alpöge.

OpenAI enters the chat they heard that Anthropic may have made progress, so Sebastien Brubak put together a research team and pursued it with an internal model said NYU prof is accusing OpenAI of trying to take credit, which kind of seems to be the case officechai.com/ai/mathemati...

officechai.comMathematician Tristan Buckmaster Says He Cracked a Fluid Dynamics Problem With AI, Accuses OpenAI of Trying to Take CreditA NYU mathematician has published a striking statement this week: a genuine breakthrough on some of the hardest open problems in fluid dynamics,...

Levant (Ant employee) and Tristan Buckmaster (NYU prof) worked together using not just Claude but also Sol & (more recently) Astra. however, Claude did produce very real and probably valuable work. Granted, Tristan describes it as barely readable “AI slop” oh Claude…

from what i can tell, the millennium prize problem has still not been claimed to have been solved. Rather, a tremendous amount of progress has been made in an extremely short period of time, causing Tristan to label it, “a Deep-Blue—Kasparov moment” for mathematics

from what i can tell: 1. millennium prize is for unforced Navier-Stokes 2. OpenAI may have gotten forced NS 3. Tristan + Levant got forced NS with smoothing, so further along also, Levant is an Anthropic employee working on this in spare time. This is definitely not an IPO stunt
