Because it’s a literal cult, and so much of people’s identities have been subsumed by Trump/MAGA, it’s exceptionally difficult for them to shift gears. Think about all the cults where people stick around even after it’s clear the cult leader is screwing their spouse, molesting their children, etc.

It’s straightforward if you’re of sound mind, but years of powerful mind control have led to a ton of people not being of sound mind. I think it could be fixed, but it would require a massive societal effort on the part of non-cultists to fully come to terms with the severity of the problem.
