In May, Markwayne Mullin said DHS would quietly continue to target "all illegals" for the deadly deportation machine. As I argued at the time, the rest of us needed to get louder in response. On Friday, Mullin and I were cited in the same NYT article on ICE's 287(g) program. We're making noise.

Mullin wants to be quiet about it, which means the rest of us need to be a lot louder. 18 people have died in ICE custody since January 1st — more people died in ICE detention in the first 4 months of 2026 than any full calendar year from 2007 to 2019.

Mullin just got $70 billion more to blow on ICE + CBP over the next ~3 years. ICE already sits on a massive slush fund to grow its contract partnerships w/ local and state police. Yet people like me, a guy with a laptop in Chicago, are running laps around DHS re: public accountability. Huh.

Meanwhile, a guy with a laptop in Chicago is able to produce an interactive, visual report that cleans up ICE's messy data for public use...in between daycare pickups and taking my dog for a walk.
