Not keen on the exact implementation but Discord making 1000+ member servers' contents indexable by search engines is an obvious W in an era where most good information is on Reddit or Discord. The big problem is that they destroyed their goodwill with age verification so now nobody trusts them.

If this feature rolled out in February, I think the reception would've been overwhelmingly positive instead of a split between "this is a good idea" and blind rage. But now (for good reason) everyone has been trained to assume the worst from them. So here we are.

I don't blame people for backing out of public websites and go with the information on closed spaces as Discord, this whole distrust situation is also GenAI's fault.

If the takeaway from LLMs is "we need to gatekeep information and make sure knowledge is a privilege in order to keep AI from seeing it" then we have failed as a society. If anything, it's info gatekeeping that (wrongly) made asking LLMs preferable to some people over search queries to begin with!

If internet searches give you garbage because all the good knowledge moved to group chats or invite-only forums with judgy members, you're going to take kindly to the machine that purports to answer all your questions without protest even if it turns out to be pretty bad at that!
