The City Council wants to give the NYPD more power to harass New Yorkers. They're hearing a bill next month that would give the NYPD a new tool to stop anyone riding a bike – whether or not they’ve broken the law. Here’s what you need to know:

Intro 606 would make it illegal to ride an e-bike without a license – and because it’s often not obvious which bikes are e-bikes, the NYPD would suddenly have newfound powers to stop and question ANY New Yorker riding ANY bike — massively increasing police-civilian interaction.

Today, police officers need to witness a violation to pull over a cyclist. If the City Council passes Intro 606, police officers will have brand-new cause to stop ANYONE on ANY bike – and question them, take their information, and put them into the system.

In New York City, 60% of cyclists are Latino, Black, or Asian. The vast majority of delivery cyclists are immigrants. In the U.S., immigrants living in dense communities like New York are 10x as likely to travel by bike compared to people born here. Intro 606 would bring back stop-and-frisk.

City Council’s bill would let the police stop and harass any New Yorker just for choosing or needing to ride a bike. We can’t give the NYPD the go-ahead to harass every New Yorker riding a bike. We need to do more to protect our neighbors, not put them at greater risk.
