Red-light runners are substantially more dangerous than the average driver — drivers who get five or more red-light camera violations are more than 100 times more likely to be in a crash resulting in death or serious injury.

Red-light cameras are highly effective at deterring dangerous driving and creating safer intersections — at intersections with red-light cameras, injuries overall dropped by nearly a third and pedestrian injuries dropped by 38%.

Yet at the start of this year, there were active red-light cameras at just 150 intersections — less than 1% of signalized intersections in New York City. DOT is currently expanding the cameras to a total of 600 intersections.

The current maximum of 600 and the previous maximum of 150 were established by the state legislature, which imposes a hard ceiling on the number of intersections that New York City can make safer with this tool.
