what is your design process when creating a map like this? especially when evaluating distances, and scaling?

I did a full project write-up when I first released this back in 2020, and you can read it here: transitmap.net/e-road-netwo... It's important to remember that this is a diagram and not a map, so clarity of the network was my primary goal. An underlying grid informed a lot of the choices.
