thank you dreki!! it's so much information to fit in a single slide, and not something I can reasonably split up in a way that doesn't detract from the organization this is hopefully one of my more dense pages out of the way though

i think it's easy to forget just how nebulous the very VERY beginning of freelancing is, before money is even involved and it was just a hobby (for many!)

This might be coming at a perfect time for me. Skill level im comfortable but been entirely lost as to how to transition that into getting comms. Keep up the good work πŸ™if its as good as your last guide this will be awesome

i hope you find this one helpful too! i'll be working on this (and a corresponding "summary" video that lightly previews its contents) over the course of the next few months while I juggle comms, so please look forward to it!

I'm not actually the target audience for this, but I think this is amazing. So much advice and "how to" comes without any context. This is so well done. Looks great, too!

That pretty much sums up my journey. I've been a freelance artist since 2020 and now I'm at the booked but still lacking phase, that's also why i have a job, since burn out was a constant to try make ends meet as a freelance. Best of luck to the freelance artists out there, it is tough!

knowing/having the ability to pick up a job on the side is SO important get your basic necessities figured out first, then worry about creative fulfillment

i definitely think once you've been doing anything for long enough, you forget just how much Unknown there was at the beginning to figure out I definitely had to backtrack a couple times and rearrange info to cover a better range

This is a great chart! I see SO MANY ARTIST get stuck in the "booked but broke" phase. They'll offer "emergency discount commissions" every few weeks bc they cant pay rent, actually making their problem worse because they are already months behind and making their work cheaper...

funnily i JUST finished drafting a slide about exactly this issue πŸ’― imo its far better to ask for help without rewards OR at most, offer something incredibly easy in return for a reasonable minimum price far more likely to get aid without burnout. discounts on your usual is a recipe for disaster

Yep, because you will burn clients that way too. If I spend months getting ghosted / repeat delays and excuses on a commission because I'm actually in a queue of dozens of owed work, I will not commission that artist again or recommend them, because they come across as unreliable.

This summarizes my journey from 2018-23 very accurately, but I couldn't break past "Booked But Broke". I ended up pivoting my career away from freelance. but if I had seen this maybe I could've pushed on. Very well-made and I hope it gives support to those who need it!

it's definitely a hard phase to break out of, especially if you're already hitting a workload limit! i know I had to swap gears a LOT to break out of it; if you ever give freelancing another chance, even on the side, hopefully its much easier getting back to that point!

Oh wow, this is actually super helpful. I love having a linear map to refer to, it makes me feel less of a failure for just being at the "getting there" stage.
