When there's a big blowout in MLB (like the Cubs beating the Brewers 17-3 yesterday), teams bring in position players to pitch, in order to not waste relief pitchers' arms on games that are pretty much settled. And it's frequently hilarious, with 35mph pitches that get crushed. 1/2

But there's a ton of complaining going on about how this somehow "bad baseball", "it ruins statistics" and "the fans don't want this", which I disagree with. My question is what's the alternative? A mercy rule? Forfeits? Those seem worse for baseball. 2/2

Personally, I think the current system is fine but if there had to be a change I’d say force managers to go through the relievers. They could easily play one reliever per inning and save their arms. Plus, major league pitcher should be able to ease off to save their arm when the game’s in the bag.

No, just use the pitchers like they always did. It's another ugly form of over-optimization that's been making the game worse for awhile. Not signing "RBI guy" that can't get on base is good. Suppressing salaries & putting position players in to pitch too much is bad

I watch baseball almost every day and I *love* it when there is a position player pitching. When my team is getting blown out it adds some fun to an otherwise miserable day, and when my team's on the up it's also kind of fun to watch them try to hit a 20mph ball.

I’m not a baseball fan but wouldn’t it be possible to tell the relief pitchers to just not go that hard? Trying to relate this to hockey and I can’t imagine them putting skaters in goal, but then goalie and relief pitchers aren’t that comparable probably.
