i recommend actually googling the thing you are telling people to google before telling them to just google it because google doesn't really work anymore

Another fun thing is that Google searches are personalized so two people can Google the same thing and get different results! Or even just different phrasings of the same search can have wildly different outcomes (although that's less surprising)

I posted this sentiment once and people yelled at me for telling POC they had to educate bigots when I was talking about a post I saw on r/woodworking where someone was asking for good furniture plans

Oh I don't mean the AI overview. I mean the AI that powers all the google search and has for years. For example, I can search on a scientific question, e.g. "how does MDM2 function in cellular response to radiation" and I'll get a hit of a peer reviewed paper that highlights what I want

On this topic, the AI overview is not trash, and the stuff on the righthand side that the AI overview draws from is actually helpful. So I don't need AI overview turned off, I just automatically skip to the part where I can pull a citation with a good quote, and I think Google understands that.

I would argue that it never was, because even if Google did provide you with answers that weren't mangled in-house, basic knowledge is still often needed to sift bullshit from real stuff on topics of any controversy.
