someone in real life asked me today, after talking for a couple of hours, how I'm so abreast of the goings on in current events and music and art and takes and opinions and weird stuff like I am, and I got to say that it was easy I'm friends with just a shit ton of trans and Black people

for all the ills of social media I'm not sad I got to sit back and listen and talk to all sorts of people I'd NEVER have heard from otherwise like, seeing a video of the Ferguson protests and hearing black people around the country say "yeah none of this is new" is what radicalized me

yes there are lots of trans folks here and more are welcome, but it's still Seattle so nobody you know, talks to each other. like all these white people I know super happy to support all the minorities in theory but it's never occurred to them to befriend them or something lol

I grew up in Kentucky, so one time I smiled and tried to initiate a conversation in a check out line at the grocery in Lynnwood, because the checkout person had to get help. The person tensed up in a way that made me thought I had said the most wrong thing. It woke me up to the silence, was wild.
