Let me clarify that: Ellen was a maintainer on the Rubygems repo who RC would employ occasionally on a 10 hours/month contract. Last paid engagement we had with them was in May. They had no production access and were not an admin. They also didn't need commit rights for the work they did.

I don’t mean this as a rude question, but does anybody on the Ruby Central board who does not work for Shopify or 37signals think this is fine? That’s who I want to hear from. I’m not attacking you personally, but working for Tobi and DHH simply renders you not credible on this question.

Again, I don’t mean it personally. People make their own decisions about who they will or will not work for and why. Lord knows I’ve done it myself. But I can’t take your word for it in this circumstance.

So, I don't understand what special access was lost here and how they could be "leaving Ruby Central" since they weren't employed or contracted by RC when they posted that. I understand if they don't want to engage with RC any more, but that is hardly leaving the organization.

Again, I was consistently working for Ruby Central from the Ruby Central/Ruby Together merger in 2021 until the end of May, and was explicitly not fired. My contract was not "sporadic one-off jobs", it was "I did a fixed number of hours each month, and that number changes based on the budget."

I never claimed that you were fired, but based on your message above, you also were not working for Ruby Central since May. I still don't understand how this is "leaving Ruby Central". Anyway, I'll not deny you your perception of events, just conveying how I see them. Thanks for your contributions.

To be clear: what I am offended by is you downplaying my role by saying RC only "occasionally" employed me. From December 2021 through this month, there are 5 months I don't have records of working for RC: - Feb 2024 - Jun, Jul, Aug, Sep 2025 & I was repeatedly told the Jun-Sep one was temporary.

To say I was not part of Ruby Central, when Marty — the person I reported to for the last 13 months — objected to me saying I felt I was going to be fired before December rolled around, is nonsense.

Hi, I'm the Ellen being referenced here. You're being incredibly misleading. Yes, I was technically a contractor, but consistently employed by Ruby Central from the Ruby Together/Ruby Central consolidation in 2021 until the end of May. This wasn't some sporadic, occasional thing.

I repeatedly kept asking RC for more hours and was told it couldn't happen. Because Ruby Central stated they could not give me more hours, and then CUT MY HOURS TO ZERO HOURS PER MONTH, I had to prioritize paid work to avoid losing my home. THAT is why I contributed less this year.

Also, the idea that I didn't need commit rights is nonsense. The majority of my work was reviewing and merging other people's PRs. This is a task that requires commit access. Stop lying.
