When I was in college in Boston, the word was “tonic.”

I am from the South, and I don't say Coke. I can not bear the aftertaste of Coke. I am a Dr Pepper , sweet tea and black coffee type of Southerner.

Southerners call soft drinks "dope", and not every soft drink is a "coke"; Sprite is Sprite, Root Beer is Root Beer. However, any brown-coloured cola that tastes similar to Coke, such as Pepsi or RC Cola, is a coke.
