âš  PSA to artists and clients on #VGen about a Discord scam going around!! âš  a scammer is scraping profiles (both artists and clients) to make fake discord accounts impersonating them, then reaching out to people they've worked with in the past who have their discord info publicly visible

This person added me a bit over a week ago to try to trick me, and I immediately reached out to the actual artist. I never responded to the fake message & they also never blocked me, so now I see every time they change their account lmao. Here’s the current impersonation (artist is already aware):

I also want to add that they are not just targeting people with publicly visible discords, they’re searching the vgen usernames on discord and hoping to find a match. You don’t have to even mention having discord anywhere on your public accounts for them to find you, if you use the same username

this lines up for me, my discord isnt attached to my vgen but its the same username anyway. I had an artist i commissioned in the past add me as friend and asked if i remembered them... which was funny since I still had their real discord in my friends list.

this is an example of what the artist-to-client scam message looks like, though there could be other versions and i haven't seen what the client-to-artist version looks like. (not my screenshot, but this was posted in the official VGen discord server and is consistent with the reports i've seen)

for anyone who uses VGen as a client or artist, it might be safest for the time being to remove your discord information from your bio and use VGen DMs or email to communicate instead. and for anyone being impersonated, i recommend putting out a warning in your announcements box to give a heads up.

this shit is so frustrating and it sucks twice as hard because there isn't much VGen themselves can probably do about the issue since it's more on Discord's end than anything else. i hope at the very least they'll put out an email or site banner warning people so they know what to look out for

So hiding your discord username and having them both shown is a double edged sword. With your name shown then you can be like this is my name 1:1 anyone else its fake. So that helps there. With it hidden that opens up impersonators to just make something up/use old stolen accounts.

I've actually reached out to artists I've worked with personally the scammers have tried this on with me to warn them of this. Unfortunately they have since stopped using their social or have not seen my DM. I hate to think these scammers are actually using these artists name in a bad light.

This is something I just experienced. I noticed the way they were talking was nothing like the artist I talked to before and very similar to scammers I interacted with in. I knew it wasn't them really them, but I tried contacting the original artist on all their know socials and cant speak to them.
