The Defense Department’s announcement that it would live-stream the execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Malik Hasan reverses decades of established practice surrounding the death penalty. The announcement has raised many legal and ethical questions. https://wapo.st/4dx3CoZ

Livestreaming an execution is not a show of our country's strength. It is a medieval and grotesque spectacle that corrupts our society and core values. We are better than this. Secretary Hegseth is not fit to lead. He must go.

🧵2 You won't even bother to explain that executing Col. Hasan - a man in a wheelchair - will give radical mullahs across the globe a #martyr to praise. An “own goal” is something that the 🌐 understands but the 🇺🇸 ignores still.

🧵1 So disappointing. This is a state sanctioned killing in all of our names. Capital punishment is a futile and wasteful practice, but you don't condemn it as such.
