So … after a week of surprise dental fun, I need to get my wisdom teeth removed. I’m dreading it. What should I be prepared for? Is it as awful as it sounds? What was recovery like for you?

It wasn’t painful at all for me and recovery was pretty easy. I was surprised how easily little bits of food got caught in the holes where the teeth used to be, for weeks or months after. Rinsing my mouth out frequently helped. Overall it was not a big deal for me at all.

I had a terrible tooth-extraction experience as a teen, and so I spent years dodging my dentist's recommendation that I remove my wisdom teeth. When I finally did, though, I went to a place that used anesthesia (possibly just sedation, but I think anesthesia) and it was not bad at all.

I had mine removed at a dental school as I didn’t have insurance. It was hilarious but the students figured things out eventually after some trial and error. My guess is your experience will be better

At 50 I had all 4 wisdom teeth removed at the same time. I don't remember it as that horrible (I was put out completely). I mostly recall my tongue being very confused for a long time. It also took a while for everything to close up properly so be sure to follow their instructions on cleaning.

I waited until my 30s to get it done, so it was closer to a normal extraction. My normal dentist did it. I was sedated and recovery was a few days of soft foods. I ate a burger less than a week later.

I remember starting the movie (Ocean’s 13), and I remember the concept of a wheelchair. I do not remember (but was told about) pantomiming putting a burger in a blender, so I know my sense of humor survived.

Mine grew in upside down, so mine is one of the less pleasant cases. I'm a total baby about mouth pain, and this wasn't the best situation. Definitely follow all directions to the letter. And get fun food while you can: pudding, Jell-O, etc. Otherwise it wasn't the worst but not one I'd repeat.

It’s really not bad. Four teeth take 15-20 minutes. I had mine out with just local anesthesia (I was in law school and didn’t want to miss class). It’ll be hard to sleep comfortably the first two nights. You’ll subsist on yogurt and protein shakes for about a week. Invest in good moldable ice packs.

If you are awake the worst bits for me was the cracking and when they pulled the teeth the pressure you feel during the process. Post-op dealing with the socket wounds by having cotton pads crammed in your mouth and eating is a bit of a journey (no straws/sucking for a little while).

My dentist told me it depends if it's the upper teeth or not. For me it was the upper ones, which is easier. It was done in a couple of minutes and I had a day with light pain, but nothing dramatic, I didn't even use the painkillers I got. I thought it would be much worse.

They removed my only two wisdom teeth (the upper ones) at the same time, and I don't remember it being that bad. You'll have to stick to soup a little more than usual, but you should be fine in a few hours :)
