Watching The Exorcist and my wife forgot about the whole archaeological dig part at the beginning which is not shocking imo because as much as I like the movie, it seems completely superfluous? Like the statue is creepy and all, but the connection isn’t totally clear (unless I’ve forgotten.)

Like you can just go to Georgetown and have Captain Howdy and the Ouija board be the source of all the demon mischief, it’s not a problem imo

I think it's just for the satisfying structure of having Father Merrin show up early in the movie and then that tease/suspense of waiting for him to come in and save the day... or so you think. Just watched Exorcist 3 for the first time this month and wow, that's a picture
