I think this is a compelling pov on this, and does share many of my own thoughts on it. Also seeing some rather over the top responses that may be focusing their rage in the wrong direction. However, I do think there's a good reason to be more cautious at the minute, especially with public WIP.

Given that the person who had their game "replicated" is also an AI slopper, is lying about that, and the "replica" was on Steam before their game was: I feel ok using this as a jumping off point for discussing why I don't think this is anywhere near as much of an issue as people are worried about

There's a growing trend around these rushed decomps and clones, and I think many are rightfully worried about game jams in particular, which are places where lots of compelling games are born in public view, in the form of fairly concrete vertical slices

Clearly the type to hurriedly publish a slop clone isn't going to produce the best vision of how that converts into a full game, but it can still be enough to kill the momentum of audience growth of an emerging creator who maybe doesn't yet have an audience to leverage

I do worry that, because this so publicly started with a game jam game being cloned, we could see a drop in participation in them, which would be quite sad. I also worry that devs will shy away from making public their devlogs and progress posts because they're worried they'll get mugged.

Yeah, I definitely agree there's a need for caution, I just don't believe (and/or don't want to believe) we're close to panic stations or existential threat right now
