just verified myself in bluesky fashion, linking my account to a personal domain. my new handle is willoremus.com which is kinda cool i guess? if you're into that sort of thing? but still doesn't feel like the long-term answer to this site's impersonation problem. i could be wrong though!

willoremus.comHomeFollow my work at the Washington Post Sign up to get e-mail alerts for each story I publish Read my previous work OneZero Slate Follow me on social media Bluesky Mastodon Threads X (if you must) Go to...

the thing is, all the other forms of verification are problematic too. i'm willing to at least *consider* the possibility that bluesky's approach is the lesser evil, especially it turns out to be a way for it to make money in lieu of advertising. but it requires educating users which is never easy.

i... guess they can? [glances around suspiciously] would be amazing if my attempt to avoid impersonation ended up getting me impersonated

I think for this reason the domain verification will cause some issues/be deficient in its purpose— especially for folks who don’t have clear identities tied to a web domain. Makes sense for nasa.gov for verification or for a big brand. Less so for individuals.
