Seems like Sony was disappointed with the sales of death stranding 2. It made money but not metal gear solid money. Sony wanted a something on par with Spiderman and Kojima wanted to stretch his legs and make something decidedly niche, with the first game its outside of boss fights very different..

DS2 was more in line with MGS but also much more expensive and people didn't jump on it as quickly as they had for the first one. Kojima has never met a budget or schedule he couldn't break and like Konami before them Sony clearly felt that the relationship wasn't worth what he was asking for...

Unfortunately for Kojima outside of Nintendo its just not possible anymore to do AAA like Kojima does anymore. Their is too much money involved and too much risk aversion. Xbox will humour Kojima for 3 years tops and then the will cut like they do the rest. History is not on there side for this.
