The keynote address will kick off at 10 am PT, and it’ll be livestreamed. There will also be a developer-focused keynote starting at 1:30 pm PT. Here’s how to watch both: www.wired.com/story/how-to...
What are we expecting to see at I/O this year? AI. So much AI. www.wired.com/story/how-to...
It was just one year ago that we first heard about AI Overviews, and since then the feature has fundamentally changed the Google search experience in ways both good and… weird. Really weird.
We’re also sure to get updates about Gemini and how the latest model is being used on Android phones. (We already know a little something about this since Google teased a bunch of new features last week.)
Google already shared the design changes in Android 16, which will include a new design language called Material 3 Expressive. Crucially, Google claims that “users are more likely to switch to products that use M3 Expressive components and techniques.” www.wired.com/story/androi...
We also already know about the new scam-blocking capabilities of Android phones, which will now be able to flag more types of digital fraud.
In a demo of Project Astra built into Gemini on phones, Google did a clever little inversion in which the human using it was hallucinating fake shit and the AI model was correcting the human. AI will ruin reality before it ultimately proposes a solution to fix it, writes @laurengoode.bsky.social.
Google's CEO Sundar Pichai just said their AI doesn't make mistakes all the time... Interesting, considering:
Big update: Google is rolling out its AI Mode chatbot-style search experience to everyone in the US starting today. 🫠 It’s the next step in the evolution of AI Overviews, which were introduced at I/O last year and haven’t exactly been super popular.
“The way we've ended up working with today's chatbots is, I think, a transitory period.” Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, says that reaching artificial general intelligence or AGI will mean honing some of the nascent abilities found in Google’s Gemini models. www.wired.com/story/google...
From @laurengoode.bsky.social: Google's head of search, Liz Reid, says AI Mode is “Google Search transformed with AI at its core." Reid is essentially saying that over time, all of Google's AI features will be injected into search. “And that begins today.” www.wired.com/live/google-...
From @snackfight.bsky.social: the Google Shopping “try-on experience” lets you take a photo of yourself, upload a photo of a piece of clothing you like, and then see what you might look like wearing it. Not creepy at all!
From @julianchokkattu.bsky.social on our commerce team: The elephant in the room is that Google takes the work of people who review products for a living, summarizing the verdict into a few sentences and bypassing precious affiliate revenue that many publishers have come to rely on.

The keynote has moved on to XR and smart glasses. Here’s our piece on Google’s Project Moohan from last year.
“As you know, we’ve been building glasses for over 10 years,” Shahram Izadi, VP and GM of Android XR, says ahead of a kind of laggy demo of Google's new smart glasses. Oh, we remember.
And that’s a wrap on the main keynote. We’ll be continuing the coverage in this thread and on our live blog. Watch this space! www.wired.com/live/google-...
And here's our roundup of everything Google announced at I/O 2025! The big takeaway is that AI is now in absolutely everything Google touches. www.wired.com/story/everyt...
