NEW: The US government has collected DNA samples from 133,000+ migrant children and teenagers and uploaded them into CODIS, a national criminal database originally built for convicted sex offenders and violent criminals, according to documents reviewed by WIRED.

The records, quietly released by the US Customs and Border Protection earlier this year, offer the most detailed look to date at the scale of CBP’s controversial DNA collection program. Some of the minors whose DNA was collected are American citizens. Link: www.wired.com/story/cbp-dn...

The DOJ has argued that DNA collection at the border will help solve crimes in the future. But experts say that the children’s raw genetic material will be stored indefinitely and worry that it could be used for more extensive profiling. Link: www.wired.com/story/cbp-dn...

If the government’s goal is to determine whether a detainee is connected to past crimes, one privacy expert tells WIRED, there would be no need to add DNA to CODIS—they could simply check for a match against existing profiles. Read the full story by @dmehro.bsky.social

I wonder if the world would be a better place if everyone’s dna was stored. It would enrich medical research; it would reduce crime. Of course once the marketing people accessed it the negative externalities begin.

Abhorrent, probably ongoing, but dates are Biden-era. Dems love cops, too, they’re just more low-key about it. “Spanning from October 2020 through the end of 2024, the records show that CBP swabbed the cheeks of between 829,000 and 2.8 million people”

They are NOT criminals! So, is Ivanka’s, Jr’s, Erick’s, Tiffany’s, and Barron’s DNA in that criminal database? After all, Donald is the biggest criminal of all.
