Volunteers in towns and cities across the country are getting ready to act if federal immigration agents show up at the polls on Election Day—which they see an existential threat to American democracy.

Officially, the Department of Homeland Security has said that it has no plans to deploy ICE agents to polling locations on Election Day. “ICE is not planning operations targeting polling locations,” a DHS spokesperson tells WIRED.

But, the DHS spokesperson added, “ICE conducts intelligence-driven targeted enforcement, and if an active public safety threat endangered a polling location, they may be arrested as a result of that targeted enforcement action.”

For the past six months, President Trump and his allies have declined to rule out possible deployments to voting locations during the midterms, even though they would be illegal under federal law.
