The ordering feels a little ... heavy? Especially since there are two obvious orderings to choose from and no strong reason to choose one over the other. Could you get the same virtues just from a scatter?

Yes, you can choose a dif order, it depends on how you want to present and interpret the data. In this case, "this is the current ranking, here are the changes". A scatter solves the annoyance of having to choose an order. For now I just wanted to sell the idea that a dot plot is better than this...

Yeah those marching bar charts are dreadful, no question. The doorbells an obvious improvement there.
