The massive extreme marine heatwave continues to stretch across the entire northern Pacific Ocean. In fact, the magnitude of the sea surface temperature anomalies even grew in August 2025 compared to earlier in the summer. Yikes... 🫠 Data from OISSTv2.1 (psl.noaa.gov/data/gridded...). 🌊

I really like your ENSO month-by-month bar charts. I hope you keep producing them regularly, I find that if I'm posting to non-experts those charts are very helpful. Thanks.

concerning the Northern Pacific: This looks more like a complete shift in the ocean dynamics. So whats happening there? Got the surface water so warm, that there is no mixing with deeper layers - like in small lakes in summer? Like the lack of upwelling in the Gulf of Panama? That's real crazy.

On a biological level this must be having a devastating effect on marine life in the N Pacific, with many being forced to move from their normal ranges. High marine animal strandings occurred on the N Pacific coast during Sep 2025, with a notable increase in dead gray whales. Catastrophic really
