For some reason Raymond Carver flashed through my head as I read this. Something wistful, ennui-ish about the words of the defeat of hope, both in the father, the husband and the demise of the (presumably for economic reasons) - railroad.

Such a bittersweet story. I'm hoping it comes true, too. People have been talking about extending/resurrecting rail lines around here for decades. I wish it would happen.
