A lot of games, especially MMOs, have super elaborate armor and weapons. They look great! But, I prefer low fantasy armor. And will go out of my way to make my duder look simpler compared to the warlock with the doom of karkarindoth rotating around him as 500 orbs and lights.

I'm guilty of this in Guild Wars 2, my guys tend to be low flash/utilitarian. Heck, my one engineer is just a guy in blue jeans, leather jacket and engineer boots!

Honestly same. I also think a lot of huge bulky armors look ridiculous, like in WoW where some sets have huge shoulder pieces.

Guild Wars 2 has a massive variety of armor types from low fantasy to high sci-fi to "literally just a guy". It's one of my favorite things about the game--there is something for everyone!

Not a game, but have you ever looked into a book series called Edge Chronicles? It's got a number of fantastical elements but it's closer to weird science that full on magic. No one is throughing out spells, and there's a lot of detail put into how the fantastical elements work within their logic.
