I've noticed a change to YouTube automatic captions recently. They've simultaneously became smarter and dumber. They seem to be more aware of context and context-specific words. For instance, in a Destiny 2 video, they're more likely to say Vexcalibur, <🧵1/6>

which is a weapon in Destiny 2, and is a word that only makes sense in a Destiny 2 video. Smarter. BUT! The person didn't say Vexcalibur. And in a video I'm watching right now, it misheard "Gamergate" as "Game of Thrones". <🧵2/6>

Now, "Game of Thrones" kinda does make sense there, it was mentioned earlier in the video, since then other fantasy/supernatural shows/movies had been mentioned, and the timings of when things happened kinda lined up. But again, "Game of Thrones" was not what was said. <🧵3/6>

And the problem here is that before, while it may have misheard "Gamergate" as something else, it was something else that sounded more similar. And if you're used to auto captions that work this way, <🧵4/6>

where it slightly mishears stuff because it's not perfect which is fine (which not just YouTube has), you use context to figure it out. "What's something that sounds kinda like 'games are eight' that makes sense in this context? Oh! 'Gamergate'!". <🧵5/6>
