🌊 After a research trip to the Arctic last year, #FRONTIERSfellow Tim Kalvelage dives into the Arctic's seafloor to uncover clues about our planet’s climate 🌍. 🔒 In Dutch: www.360magazine.nl/expeditie-di... #FRONTIERS #ScienceJournalism #FrontierScience @timkalvelage.bsky.social

1/3 Back on R/V Kronprins Haakon! I am currently covering an #expedition with the Norwegian #research icebreaker Kronprins Haakon in the #ArcticOcean. Earlier this week, the ship reached the geographic #NorthPole. Low sea-ice cover allowed for easy passage through the central #Arctic.

2/3 The expedition aims to answer how the Arctic Ocean looked like during warm periods in Earth's history. Was it ice-free back then? How did the marine ecosystem change? Scientists look for clues to these questions in sediments deposited over hundreds of thousands of years on the Arctic seafloor.

3/3 Their answers could help shed light on what the future holds for the Arctic as temperatures are rising and #SeaIce and #glaciers are melting – and how this will affect people in Europe or North America.

After four weeks in the #Arctic, I'm spending the next two months of my @frontiersmedia.bsky.social science journalism residency at @gfz.bsky.social in Potsdam. At GFZ, I'm embedded with the team of @lianegbenning.bsky.social who studies the secret lives and biogeochemistry of #glacier #microbes.

For our English speaking friends: We're happy to host journalist and photographer @timkalvelage.bsky.social who will accompany our researcher @lianegbenning.bsky.social in the upcomings months. This was made possible through the FRONTIERS Science Journalism Residency Program of @erc.europa.eu 1/2

You are up to date.
