I'm reading a debut novel which has been (justifiably) lauded for what it tells us about 'contemporary life'. Its protagonists are of course all young people. Made me wonder what hot new novelists are writing great books about 'contemporary life' that also feature middle-aged & older people?

160. The way music speaks. Do not forget that a poem, even though it is composed in the language of information, is not used in the language-game of giving information. -Ludwig Wittgenstein, from Zettle (tr. G. E. M. Anscombe) one of those ‘endless’ books — a Borgesian ‘book of sand’

Did somebody say… don’t use a raw technology to generate imagery and destroy brand value?

a UK food delivery service experimented with AI-generated images for restaurant menu items that lacked pictures. they stopped when customers reported seeing some unusual new dishes. a tiger-prawn dish became a bowl containing actual tiger cubs. friends, i think the tech may not be ready.

This line from the Telegraph’s CEO is particularly choice. It is an impossible to build a *premium* media brand that is also “AI-powered”. Doubly so if the raw material you’re starting with is… The Daily Telegraph.

It worked to the extent that I clicked, even though I am not a landlord. If this is the way to build brands in a contemporary landscape I might be done.

And on and on it goes. Leaving to chance, it seems, a policy area vital for democracy, national cohesion and confidence, earning and international reputation. Staggering dereliction.

It is boggling; Private Eye reports that Tory policy is to hack £1bn out of DCMS. Who is refuting that? Who is saying, no that is no response to 15 years of chronic under funding plus local government cuts?

Why is this department so reactive? Last time I heard from the SoS it was in the letter about the ITV/Sky merger. Great but: why not before? What are you doing about C4 shrinking?

You can’t just make media, arts, culture policy in a vacuum. Where are the outriders, the wonks, the MPs to start pitch rolling for, well, any position? I appreciate this might be because there is no position to make!

So if we hold on for long enough, we could revive the high street as we find agents can’t do the shopping for us once we all have one…

Mia Sato@miasato.bsky.social

I’ve found shopping with agents to be a bit tedious, especially if you’re someone with lots of preferences. But it’s not hard to see how the shopping experience could quickly degrade for humans when agents are mass deployed. www.theverge.com/report/10158...
