One of my favorite dark and high drama at the beach books is Kem Nunn's Tapping the Source (which also inspired the movie Point Break! ) Surf Noir FTW!

There's some office buildings in town that do radars and such for jets that's very high-security - imposing gate, towering fences (recently topped with barbed wire) etc. I noticed recently the hedge they have around the foot of the fence is hawthorn and now it reminds me of Asmodeus when I go past
