The most horrifying part about this to me is that there's ways to do paperwork to prevent this, but poor people are not taught about it, we are not informed that we need to do this, rich people know all the paperwork secrets and they intentionally keep poor people from them

I mean, everything has a secret language, and despite what the flat-tax weirdos will tell you there's no real way to make money uncomplicated but it seems insane to me that it's like reverse consent. The state can fuck you unless you explicitly prevent them.

This scenario is also a consequence of the fucked-up US safety net where the only way to get long-term care is to spend all your assets down to zero. There are ways to shield some assets, but that's a cumbersome and sometimes effectively inaccessible process even for financially savvy people.
