At first, you'd think that Ms Magazine would be the last to honor Dolly Parton. But behind the hair, the boobs, the lipstick, the drawl, they recognized a woman who was smart, hard-working and never turned her back on who she was. Being amazingly talented helped! Kudos to Gloria Steinam.

Why are the wrong people dying? Can't some scumbags kick the bucket and leave this world instead of the brightest and best people? We really are living in a hideous petri dish universe that's been overrun with fungus and blight.

Steinem? The anti-communist CIA spy who was instrumental in shifting American feminism away from class struggles? Well, the devotion is richly deserved on Parton's part, at least.

I wish I had known this earlier. This morning I led a memorial to both Dolly and Gloria in my 'Women Empowered' group. I would have loved to to have shared this but will share with a few now. Thank you for sharing.

Steinem wrote of Dolly: "she has crossed musical class lines to bring work, real life, and strong women into a world of pop music usually dominated by unreal romance...." /2

"She has used her business sense to bring other women and poor people along with her. And her flamboyant style has turned all the devalued symbols of womanliness to her own ends"... /3

Ms. ran this cover in 1981, after the release of 9 to 5, which, rather astonishingly, had an article too on "Endometriosis: The "Career Woman's Disease" (which, coincidentally, Dolly Parton suffered from). Ms. was so very ahead of its time... /5
