Holy shit. I did not see this coming. This changes everything. They decoupled semantic intelligence from text generation. This is an AI that is as smart as Fable, but which is structurally incapable of threatening the liberal arts.

Jev: Fable-level model that doesn’t charge for output tokens because they’re too cheap to meter it’s not general though, it only makes decisions, doesn’t generate text, but input tokens are measured by the billion ($42/btok) typesafe.ai/blog/introdu...

that seems not true? it's certainly capable of 'threatening' the liberal arts (just to mirror that language). super cool tho.

But the point is still strong: we can build systems on this that are no “threat” in the sense I mean, in a way that we have heretofore struggled to do with LLMs for various reasons.

I feel like it is strange to think of liberal arts in terms of culture-production lol, we're not talking about fine arts here.

Fair cop; I am not using the modern definition. :3

Arithmetic, geometry, music, and astronomy — these four arts were in antiquity named the Quadrivium. Together with the trivium — grammar, logic, and rhetoric — they formed the seven liberal arts. “Liberal” here means free — the liberal arts are those befitting a free person.

Okay! Long as you’re disagreeing with what I’m actually saying instead of what it sounded like I was saying, I don’t mind. 😁

I mean I didn't think you did? I'm just saying I'm not sure this is true, like, math is essentially predicated on a series of decisions, and a lot of 'liberal arts' part of our cultural production are in fact load-baring social structures. i'm not sure the distinction is salient.

I think that your rebuttal is perfectly valid, and hope to hear more later, but: salient to whom? I think the “keep AI, save the liberal arts” framing could be used to bring large parts of the anti-AI camp into coalition with the pro-AI anti-arms-race camp.

it's literally nonsense? not only is it a lie, it's just not how people see the world and how they would encounter this?

yes but you surely recognize this is an annoying way to discuss things lol

I have learned that it is annoying to you! Unfortunately, annoying is in the eye of the beholder, and I have selected for a community that finds it engaging more than annoying. :3

I am not talking about your beliefs or patterns, we have plenty of pleasant interactions! but treating being disagreed with like an opportunity not to find common ground but to dismissively play around with someone is somewhat disrespectful imo.

if I had known this would be one such interaction where you indicated contempt I wouldn't have engaged, but not all engagements are like that and I haven't been hostile.
