I’ll say this as somebody who has sat through a couple RSL blizzards. I’m only mad that I won’t have any summer sport to follow. Plus the 100 deg summer games SUCK. I live in Utah. I can deal with the snow. Hell the LAFC snow game 2 years ago was an amazing win, 3-0 #RSL

the obvious answer to "its too cold for fans" is to build a stadium with a tiered race track around it so fans can run around and warm up while watching the game like one of those ant death spirals

Well reasoned article but I think it hand waves away the major problem with the "you're soft" framing. Like it or not, the belief is that games in cold markets are going to suck, which means less ticket sales and less interest in those teams. That has always been my major objection to the move.

From my personal club perspective I am assuming that this will hurt local ticket sales/interest. Nashville will be considered a 'warm city' and get a higher %of winter matches, but we are not Florida. It could be anywhere from 6 to 60 degrees here, And locals are not coming out for cold, rainy days

That too. For all the fans that are saying "warm-weather cities" when you break that down a number of the warm weather cites aren't that warm, they're just not miserably cold.

But also some of the “cold-weather cities” are extremely warm in the summer. I’ve always seen St Louis lumped in with the cold cities but I do remember Chiellini complaining about the hot weather there and Bürki being highly in favour of switching calendars bc summer games are too hot

It's all relative. People in Nashville will not turn out in great numbers with temps in 40s, as local understanding of 'too cold' will prevail. And the stubborn refusal to play cold weather matches in the afternoon will also hurt attendance

And I know the common refrain is "schedule them away from home" but that has a whole host of problems itself and the league stated when they made the announcement they didn't want more than 3 consecutive home or away games for any team. Which means that's not a solution.

At this point though, the arrogance the league is showing in this move is what really irks me. It might be better for the league as a whole, but unlike the J-League they're just telling fans who will be negatively impacted to suck it up and deal with it. Not a great way to treat customers.

You’re not wrong, but I do think it will be ~2 games that are legit very cold for ~5 teams and if you schedule them as day time kickoffs you can probably get lucky that it will end up being mostly a non issue. A lot depends how late into Dec they go and how early Feb they start.

The new season starts mid-February. So a team could have 2 away games, one early March game, another away game or two in March and then you're out of most of the worst of the winter weather.

There has been at least one leak that suggests the weekend before the Super Bowl as a start weekend. So that doesn't quite do it. And there's still November and December to deal with.

This lines up with the results from all the surveys of the players indicating that they *much* preferred a fall/winter/spring schedule. Running 90 minutes in a sauna isn't fun.
