I realize that there is an advantage to being early on a platform, and benefitting from that (as I did on Twitter) can skew your perceptions. I’ve tried to keep that in mind about Bluesky, where…I do not have that benefit. But I dunno, even with that in mind, it’s always felt a bit icy to me here.

Some of this is because bsky is a self-selected life raft not a cross section. Some of it is some of the most annoying people on earth were the first to colonize here. Some is the product — turns out people do want an algorithm even when they say they don’t.

Worst is that people who should know better deciding rubbing elbows with white nationalism and CSAM on X was more acceptable than having to mute the aforementioned annoying dingbats and so we do miss out on some genuinely interesting voices here.

Like, it just feels like there’s kind of a prevailing attitude of “don’t talk to me” here that feels unlike Twitter in its heyday. I get that there are cultural reasons for that, but it can make the place feel a bit insular.

Anyway, I know we’re not going back to the social media of 2012 or whatever, and I sure as hell am not gonna use X, but it’s a bit of a bummer.
