SCOOP: 'Tommy' from the now-viral exchange with Abdul El-Sayed is Thomas Teepell, a former staffer for Republican Senator Josh Hawley with close ties to Christian Nationalist Sean Feucht. He's the son of a former Bobby Jindal staffer whose consultant work was instrumental in getting Hawley elected.

Meta took down the No Kings organizing page today - the biggest day of protest this fall. They provided zero explanation. It stayed down for the entire afternoon until most of the protests were done. Outrageous. Put this on the January investigation list.

What is going on over there? bsky.app/profile/jenn...

A bad update: we're getting reports of pro-No Kings creators who have been suspended today as well. And we still lack backend access to the official No Kings account. Stay tuned, will report news when I have it.

Full update from our team. We STILL do not have admin access to the account.

I continue to believe that role play—improv if you will—is the best way to think about what LLMs are doing. What is startling and interesting is that this facility for role play, combined with huge amounts of data, allows these models to simulate consciousness and expertise so convincingly.

Colin@colin-fraser.net

Just to be very explicit, my claim is that the one simplest and best explanation for this, which resolves any apparent strangeness entirely, is that whoever is “speaking” in LLM output is a fictional character, and the real life thing called an LLM is a machine for writing lil stories about that guy

It’s almost like if you wrote a scenario about, say, the world’s greatest coder, and you have an actor who is capable of improving that part so convincingly that they’re basically indistinguishable from the actual world’s greatest coder.

That $366 million Elon is spending to try and convince voters that Congress should stay Republican? It's more money than McCain's 2008 campaign spent. But it's also, relative to Musk's net worth, the same as a household at the median income spending $32.

ctinsider.comThe 2026 question: Which is more powerful, money or people?Elon Musk has spent $366 million this election cycle. Philip Bump examines what that kind of money can buy in American politics.

As someone who has been experimenting with running local models on GPU-less Raspberry Pi’s lately, can confirm—even smaller models that are ostensibly optimized for limited hardware environments are pretty near unusable.

cpu is dogshit slow for inference, and self-replicating worms already exist (you may know them as rVPNs or botnets) alas they're just repackaging an existing problem as "you should be afraid of everyone's ai except ours"

Same. I guess the way I look at it is that Twitter ceased to be Twitter the moment Musk took it over, so deciding to leave was just acknowledging that reality. What good is clinging to clout among people I fundamentally don’t respect?

why does the media repeatedly demand Abdul El-Sayed answer for everything Hasan Piker says because of the time they did an event together, but not demand every Republican candidate answer for stuff Elon Musk, the largest GOP donor in '24 and '26, says?

I have a lot to say about this now that AI has become an important part of my life as a software engineer…

ceej@ceej.online

there’s an uncomfortable nuance probably worth diving into about the ethics of using generative AI to ship code versus generate art assets versus clone a person’s voice versus push slop to the algorithms. I truly don’t know where the line is. it’s frustrating

For starters, I think one thing people don’t appreciate is just how much of an engineer’s day used to be spent Googling errors, reading vague docs, interpreting sample code, combing through Stack Overflow threads, etc. in search of unnecessarily arcane info.

LLMs have mostly eliminated that part of my job, and I neither miss it nor feel that my integrity is compromised by not having to deal with it. I waste far less time cobbling together annoying hacks because I didn’t realize a better solution was available, and I’m constantly learning new stuff.

I realize that there is an advantage to being early on a platform, and benefitting from that (as I did on Twitter) can skew your perceptions. I’ve tried to keep that in mind about Bluesky, where…I do not have that benefit. But I dunno, even with that in mind, it’s always felt a bit icy to me here.

Like, it just feels like there’s kind of a prevailing attitude of “don’t talk to me” here that feels unlike Twitter in its heyday. I get that there are cultural reasons for that, but it can make the place feel a bit insular.

Anyway, I know we’re not going back to the social media of 2012 or whatever, and I sure as hell am not gonna use X, but it’s a bit of a bummer.

“Once everyone has…an ‘exceptionally capable personal agent,’ does anyone?” I’ve been saying this since the days of Waze routing everyone to the same shortcut, rendering it no longer a shortcut. Modern tech is obsessed with productizing these kinds of myopic “cheats.”

Never forget that David Ellison's Skydance Media was originally created so he could be an actor. Skydance's first film was 'Flyboys' starring James Franco and... David Ellison. David and his daddy invested $60m to make Flyboys. It grossed $17m Here's a bit of David's acting:

After the Butlerian Jihad, Mentats will be required to run Fantasy Football leagues.

Mike Drucker@mikedrucker.bsky.social

Just saw someone say their AI runs their fantasy football team and I can’t stop laughing. Like, I’m sure everyone’s doing it or something but it’s very funny to me that pretending to be a team manager was so hard that you needed to pretend to pretend to be a team manager

I was scared by a lot of movies as a kid, but the scene in Superman 3 where a woman is forcibly turned into a cyborg by a rogue computer stands out. Saw that movie in the theater, and that image haunted me.

I also found Supergirl (1984), with its witchy Faye Dunaway character and weird Phantom Zone sequence with Peter O’Toole, pretty unsettling.

“how do we win back trump voters in 2026” we don’t. we create an environment where admitting to voting for trump is so socially embarrassing as to render them completely inert. you don’t “win back” trump voters. you demoralize them into staying home. you make it a dunce cap

An annoying hallmark of these kinds of articles is the lack of specificity about “AI.” Many of the examples they cite are conventional ML applications that can be run on edge computers (not data centers), but I suspect most readers wouldn’t appreciate the differences between those and huge LLMs.

Carl T. Bergstrom@carlbergstrom.com

Columnist Stephen Rattner probably got screwed over by the headline writer, but I'm seriously floored at how poor a job these six charts do at showing that we need AI.
