The most disappointing thing about Figma sites is that they fell into the same trap as almost every other website builder. They assumed (arrogantly) that HTML and CSS are over engineered and that they can make it much simpler. They are not alone. So many tools before them has done the same. 👇

The reality is that there is all the difference in the world between designing a picture of a website and designing a fully responsive and accessible site. They are different problems that require different tools.

When you design a website in Figma you don't have to worry about image sizes, responsiveness, keyboard interaction, focus order, dynamic content etc. etc. But these are all part of designing a website. They are not just details that the tool can handle for you.

The CSS is spec is big, but is is not (that) bloated. You really do need all those properties eventually. One lesson we have learned when building @nordcraft.com is that almost every time we think we can come up with a simpler abstraction, we end up regretting it. That is why we stick with CSS.

Trying to make tools simpler and more accessible to beginners is a really noble goal but your tools has to be at least as complex as the problem it is meant to solve. Otherwise the end users is the one who suffers.
