Congrats!!! 🥳

CSS-Tricks*@css-tricks.com

CSS-Tricks has a new owner! Yes, I've got the keys to the castle, so to speak. And, even after 12 years of working on the site, I'll admit I'm a little overwhelmed and nervous about that. https://css-tricks.com/css-tricks-has-a-new-owner/

Yesterday I pushed samwho.dev 2.0. - Every interactive/visual post revamped. - New content added to several old posts. - New consistent visual style throughout. - Dark mode(!) - New interactive heroes for all posts that didn't have them. - Updated dog animations.

Yesterday My daughter and her friend was playing with WalkiTalkies and suddenly she had invited 3 kids from the neighbourhood over to make games. One of them was this game, where you have to get a job at the jobcenter and go to work every day until you retire.

Andreas Møller@andreasmoller.dk

For a while my oldest daughter has enjoyed making video games with her friends, so we decided to make our own game studio (aka website). andreasmoller.dk/blog/snotnos...

AI can be used to build “good enough” websites faster or it can be used to make the web better, more fun, more exciting, more performant and more accessible. We need way more people going for the second option. And yes that does require you to learn HTML and CSS

Kevin Powell@kevinpowell.co

I wish I'd realized when recording this that it would come out on the 10-year anniversary of my channel, but even if I didn't mention it, I guess it's still pretty fitting 😅 (plus it was posted to my second channel anyway, lol)

Interviewed another great Danish designer! 🇩🇰 I spoke with Mickey Switzer about the brutal jump from designer to founder. As a designer-turned-founder myself, trading pixels for putting out fires hits home. High standards don't vanish, but time does, meaning you ship work that could be better.

We asked ourselves what we wanted the future of web development looked like. Instead of asking what AI can do, we asked: What do we want it to do? And what will we always want to do by hand? The result is a product that is still Nordcraft at its core, but feels like whole new tool!

We have been quiet for a while... This is why.

Imagine a social network where people owned their own data. Then this kind of thing could never happen.

It's so interesting how some slop accounts on here learned to close replies/disable quotes and block every single critical poster (to hide their posts) skythread.mackuba.eu?author=omgis... , as soon as they get called out for obviously AI generated memes. Can't wait for local community notes, ngl

I am REALLY looking forward to scoped view transitions. Trying to mask them by giving other elements view-transition-names is not great.

With scroll-driven animations multiple animations on different elements can be tied to the same timeline. Is there a proposal to enable this for time based timelines? Creating a named timeline that can be used by several elements but triggered in one place.

I do want to make gradients like this natively in css

Josh Tumath@joshtumath.uk

Yesterday, the CSSWG accepted my proposal for mesh gradients and diffusion curve gradients! Want to make gradients like this natively in CSS? Well, we've started the work on it. It's coming! Here's the Explainer: github.com/w3c/csswg-dr...

Writing code by hand is not very efficient anymore. But having employees who genuinely love their job, and the suck all the joy out of it by dictating what tools they use and how much is unbelievably stupid. Don’t hire people smarter then you and tell them how to do their job.

“doing fancy stuff that break the way things normally work” is when things get interesting. The best websites break the way things normally work. A11y is not easy, it is actually really hard. It is also what separates mediocre devs from the great ones.

Sergio Luján Mora@sergiolujanmora.bsky.social

The Web is accessible out-of-the-box. Sometimes we break it by using the wrong HTML elements for the job. Sometimes we break it with CSS. Often, we break it by trying to do fancy stuff with JavaScript that breaks the way things normally work. C. Ferdinandi

Sepration of concerns is when you stop reading the code that Claude generated.

Samo Korošec@samokorosec.bsky.social

Separation of concerns is when you decide an issue that might pop up will concern whoever is working on the code when it does, which you plan on not being you. This helps separate yourself from the concern and thus live a calmer life as a result. 👍

Elm is the most beautiful language I have ever used.

Evan Czaplicki@evancz.dev

Elm 0.19.3 is out today! ✨ elm-lang.org/news/another... ✨ Check out the roadmap for the next few releases too. We are preparing the compiler for some exciting improvements and features 😊

The most interesting thing about css-in-js is its critics. Most criticism of css-in-js is very shallow and essentially boils down to "that is not was I was taught". It usually comes with oversimplified statements and a touch of name calling.

Bruce Lawson@brucel.bsky.social

Brogrammers couldn't wrap their megabrains around not-a-real-language CSS, so decided to reinvent it and fight against the web platform for their own convenience. Who could possibly have predicted it would be crap for users, and would need expensive surgery to drain the festering pus?

That is not to say there aren't valid criticisms of css-in-js solutions. There definitely is. Performance is a key one. But that is a criticism of individual libraries, not the concept in general.

I posted this on Reddit, and the most noticeable thing was how few people understood what Separation of concerns is while also arguing that it is very important. #css

This is a really interesting topic, It will likely take some time before we understand this

Gergely Orosz@gergely.pragmaticengineer.com

The cost of introducing and paying off tech debt has changed very, very much and I don't even know most of us have the time and space to think about what it means Tech debt has been so central to the software craft for decades, and now... how much does it matter?

This is both great news and really terrifying at the same time

Der Fisher@blackholefun.bsky.social

Unpopular opinion: LLMs are generally deradicalizing people whose beliefs are based on pure propaganda. I've been watching this happen slowly with some people I care about. ChatGPT is one of the reasons they finally accept that the NRA, OAN, and NewsMax are lying to them.

On a 5-10 year horizon, LLMs are going to result in much safer software with fewer security holes

dame@dame.is

i challenge you to post one optimistic take or belief today on bluesky this needn’t be toxic positivity, just good ol’ run of the mill optimism/hope in the face of a torrential downpour of doom

The author blocked me for this 🤦‍♂️. If you love the web, but hate AI, now must be a very confusing time. If we want more people to have their own website, AI is by far our best bet. I will still prefer a hand crafted site any day but that is not for everyone.

Andreas Møller@andreasmoller.dk

If you don’t want to learn how to build websites , just use AI. It is not the same as a handcrafted website, but you still get all the benefits below

One of the best things about terrible employers is that they almost always let you know before you take the job.

Kai Ryssdal@kairyssdal.bsky.social

I’m sorry, but if you bring an iced coffee - or any damn beverage at all - to a job interview, you’re disqualified. It’s not hard, people.

I love the term “mostly undisclosed” used by the OP.

dame@dame.is

hi bsky, i have a confession… this may come as a shock, but i’ve been using AI all along i thought i could keep it a secret by posting about AI regularly and openly sharing how i use it, but i should’ve known the super sleuths would eventually uncover the truth 😔 anyway, talk to @poe.atpota.to

Why is this still a thing? Scrolling is not exactly a niece use case. Why do we need scrollbars for accessibility?

Adrian Roselli@aardrian.bsky.social

I am once again imploring you NOT TO FUCK WITH SCROLLBARS. This article didn’t test the accessibility (the examples fail multiple SCs) and also seems to forget Firefox exists. blog.master.dev/custom-scrol... At least the comments take it to task. #accessibility #a11y #CSS
